AFFORDABLE HOUSING
East Hampton, NY
In 2020, SKOLNICK led a firm-wide design charrette to address one of the most imperative community needs in the East End of Long Island: affordable and equitable housing for working families. For many participants in the local economy, such as health care workers, teachers, construction trades, and artists, it has become increasingly difficult to own or even rent a home within an hour’s commute, at best. The lack of affordable housing is fundamentally altering the socio-economic diversity of these communities which once gave them their character and strength. The firm’s concept design addressed four priority goals: equitable and accessible amenities; energy efficiency and hi-performance; prefabricated modular construction; and architectural design that emphasizes individual ownership and identity.
