Rye Free Reading Room

RYE FREE READING ROOM

Rye, NY

Rye’s library is housed in a stately 1913 brick Georgian structure located on the village green in the center of Rye, NY near its main business district. A series of recent flood events, intensified by the facility’s adjacency to a stream, prompted the library to look at mitigating these water infiltration issues and, in the process, rethinking how it can best serve the local community for the future.

A NEW VISION FOR THE LIBRARY

SKOLNICK conducted a series of workshop discussions with stakeholders, library user groups, and residents to assist with planning for the project. In addition to adoption of flood mitigation strategies, the project included a study for reorganization of various library functions, incorporating a new entry lobby, a second-floor expansion with a rooftop reading deck overlooking the green, and upgrades to the building’s HVAC and electrical systems.
